Benjamin Altman est un important collectionneur d’art et un entrepreneur américain, originaire de New-York. En 1865, il fait fortune avec la création du grand magasin de luxe B. Altman and Company, l’une des premières chaînes de magasins à s’étendre à d’autres régions que celle de sa ville d’origine. Les revenus de l'entreprise ont alimenté le financement de la fondation Altman (Altman Foundation) lancée peu de temps avant sa mort, en 1913. Elle est dédiée au financement de projets caritatifs et vise à soutenir les établissements d’éducation.
Grand amateur d’art, il collectionne les porcelaines orientales et les peintures anciennes, dont de nombreux Rembrandt. Il acquiert la majorité de sa collection sur les conseils du célèbre marchand d’art britannique Joseph Duveen. Quelques temps avant sa mort, Altman lègue sa collection au Metropolitan Museum of Art : de cette façon, le musée hérite notamment de son premier Vermeer et de plus de 20 Rembrandt.

Benjamin Altman is an important art collector and American entrepreneur, originally from New York. In 1865, he made his fortune with the creation of the luxury department store B. Altman and Company, one of the first chain of stores to expand beyond its hometown. The company’s revenues contributed to the financing of the Altman Foundation, founded shortly before his death in 1913. It is dedicated to the financing of charitable projects and aims to support educational institutions.
As a great art lover, he collected Oriental porcelain and ancient paintings, including many Rembrandts. He acquired most of his collections through his friend, famous British art dealer Joseph Duveen. Some time before his death, Altman donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art : in this way, the museum inherited its first Vermeer and more than 20 Rembrandts.
