La famille Mellon incarne brillamment deux générations de grands mécènes américains ayant contribué au rayonnement de l’art européen et américain aux Etats-Unis.
En 1937, Andrew Mellon, un riche banquier et industriel américain, crée le musée de la National Gallery of Art (NGA).
Son fils, Paul Mellon, perpétue la tradition de philanthropie initiée par son père en faisant don au musée de 913 chefs-d’œuvre composés de peintures, de dessins et de sculptures de grands maîtres : van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne...
Ce don, ainsi que « [s]a générosité et [son] service rendu à la nation » sont qualifiés d’ « inégalés » par le directeur du musée.
Après sa mort le musée organise l’exposition « An Enduring Legacy : Masterpieces from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon » où l’œuvre de Degas est à l’honneur, dont les très rares sculptures en cire modelées par l’artiste.

The Mellon family brilliantly embodies two generations of great American patrons who have contributed to the influence of European and American art in the United States.
In 1937, Andrew Mellon, a wealthy American banker and industrialist, created the National Gallery of Art (NGA) museum.
His son Paul Mellon continues the tradition of philanthropy initiated by his father by donating 913 masterpieces of paintings, drawings and sculptures by great masters to the museum : van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne...
This gift, as well as “his generosity and service to the nation” are described as “unsurpassed” by the museum director.
After his death, the museum organized the exhibition «An Enduring Legacy: Masterpieces from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon» in which Degas' work is in the spotlight, including the very rare wax sculptures hand-modeled by the artist.
